Pick up a Research Reliability Checklist at the front of the class. Using the checklist, look at the following links and with a partner rank the sites 1-5 (1 being VERY reliable and 5 being NOT reliable).
Lets look at the sources cited in this text. How did the author cite sources? In-text? Bibliography? How can we cite sources and include information from sources in our texts?
Making your own SAFETY rules: Finish your list of rules!
In small groups, you will be asked to form a list of 10 important internet safety rules you think we should all agree to follow in this class. Don't just come up with tips off the top of your head- find information from professionals on the web. Make sure that you are taking information from PROFESSIONALS though, not just random people giving advice on their blogs. The sites you use should give accurate and viable information! How do we know if sources are accurate and viable??
End Task: Using Google Docs, your group will compile a list of your top ten Internet safety rules. Next to each, you must provide evidence by providing a link to the reliable source that provided you with this idea. You may get multiple rules from one source, but your list should synthesize information from at least three (3) sources. We will create a page on our wiki that compiles your lists.
So... What About Independent Reading?????
Let's look at independent reading requirements for this year. You may wonder why they seem relatively simple compared to last year. I want QUALITY not quantity! Push yourself to venture past the "candy reads." Find some books you can go in-depth with. I want to see you jump into some nonfiction, classics, and adult bestsellers!
